Clemency for Veloso? ‘Malayo pa tayo doon’

MANILA – President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has ruled out the possibility of granting overseas Filipina worker Mary Jane Veloso executive clemency in the days to come.

In an interview with the media on Thursday morning, the Chief Executive said the possibility of granting Veloso a clemency is still “far off” as they still have look on her case first.

“Malayo pa tayo doon. We still have to look at really what their status is,” Marcos said. “Wala namang condition na binigay ang Indonesia, so it’s really up to us. But we’re still at the very preliminary stage of her pag uwi.”

President Marcos added that he will trust the judgment of the government’s legal experts regarding a possible clemency.

“We will leave it to the legal judgment of the — the judgment of our legal experts to determine whether the provision of clemency is appropriate,” the President said.

Veloso, who was jailed in Indonesia for almost 15 years due to drug trafficking, on Wednesday urged President Marcos to grant her a clemency, claiming that she is innocent.

“Gusto ko na makalaya ako… Clemency… mapawalang sala. Kasi wala akong kasalanan,” Veloso said in an interview with the local media before she left Jakarta. Indonesia.

Indonesia has said it would respect any decision made by the Philippines, including if Veloso will be given clemency./PN
