Coastguard rescuers foil LSI’s suicide attempt

ILOILO City – A 21-year-old lass, a locally stranded individual (LSI) from Palawan, tried to kill herself by jumping from a ship at the wharf in Lapuz district yesterday at around 7 a.m.

Philippine Coast Guard rescuers quickly fished Sherlyn Gantalao out of the water alive.

Gantalao was a resident of Barangay Abacca, Cauayan, Negros Occidental. From Palawan, she and her mother boarded a Montenegro Shipping Lines vessel bound for Negros Occidental.

The vessel had two scheduled stops however – in this city and the port in Dumangas, Iloilo before proceeding to Negros Occidental.

“She is now in good condition. She was bound for Negros Occidental where she was scheduled to undergo quarantine together with her senior citizen mother,” said Police Major Edsel Balibadlan, La Paz police chief.

Gantalao refused to discuss with the police her reason for jumping into the water. Investigators could only speculate.

From Lapuz, the ship proceeded to the Dumangas Port before heading to Negros Occidental.

Balibadlan said his men made sure Gantalao reached Dumangas safely; they boarded the vessel and kept an eye on her./PN
