DUMAGUETE City – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will not stop dolphin- and whale-watching tours in Bais City and nearby towns like Manjuyod in Negros Oriental.
Lieutenant Junior Grade Donna Liza Ramacho of PCG-Dumaguete Station gave the assurance during a dialogue with tour boat operators in Bais City on March 23.
In the presence of Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) representatives, the coastguard discussed concerns with boat operators such as the salient laws requiring them to have their sea craft duly registered.
Many unregistered boats continue to operate despite continued warnings from authorities, Ramacho lamented.
These boats must be registered with MARINA, the agency which has authority over different sea vessels.
According to Ramacho, they just want to make sure that the tour operators are properly documented to ensure the safety of passengers as well as crew members.
One of the concerns raised by a dolphin-watching tour operator was that MARINA only has two personnel based in Dumaguete City and the agency does not even have an office in the Negros Island Region.
MARINA in Dumaguete City reports to the regional office in Central Visayas or Region 7, which is based in Cebu City. (PNA)
