SAN JOSE, Antique – Coastguards in the province are augmenting security forces for two big events in Western Visayas in 2017.

The Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit will be held in Iloilo and Boracay Island early next year, while Antique will host the Palarong Pambansa for the first time from April 23 to 29.

Lieutenant Commodore Eric Ferrancullo, head of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Antique, said they are now busy preparing.

Their main concern is the security at sea of the diplomats and the athletes, Ferrancullo said. “We will have standby rescuers.”

Specifically for Palarong Pambansa, the coastguards in the province are expecting around 15,000 sports officials and athletes from across the country, mostly arriving via roll-on, roll-off vessels.

Aside from its station here, PCG-Antique also has substations in Lipata (Culasi), Caluya, Semirara, and Libertad. (PNA)
