Columbian Dyip envisions PBA PH Cup contention

Following dismal finishes in the past few seasons, Columbian Dyip believes that it is due for playoff contention in the 2020 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup with the emergence of Jaymar Perez and the bevy of talented rookies led by Filipino-American Roosevelt Adams.

Dyip head coach Johnedel Cardel said that his squad now has the arsenal to be on the same page with the other big teams in the league.

Aside from Adams – top overall pick in last year’s PBA regular draft – Columbian Dyip also signed up newcomers Christian Balagasay and Edson Batiller. The two were part of the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights team that won the National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball title.

Medyo malalim ang bench namin because of the addition of rookies and of course more nag-improve ang mga locals like Eric Camson. I think this All-Filipino sana makapag-quarterfinals kami or better,” said Cardel.

The coach is already on high hopes about the tandem of Perez and Adams. The duo displayed glimpse of deadly combinations in Dyip’s tune-up matches during the offseason.

“Roosevelt can shoot from the outside and can defend. I like this guy, mabait, coachable, he’s willing to compete. Sabi ko kahit rookie ka, don’t think na you’re a rookie,” Cardel said.

He added: “Iyan din ang sinabi ko kay CJ Perez before. Kapag magkasama sila sa loob, fast game i. Maganda, I’m really excited.”

Last year, Dyip had a 4-7 win-loss record and tied for eighth place with the Alaska Aces and the NLEX Road Warriors. The team, however, missed the playoffs due to inferior quotient.

“We have a big chance kasi last All-Filipino, maganda ang pinakita namin; kahit hindi malalim ang bench, muntik na kaming pumasok,” Cardel said. “But this time, siguro baka ito na ang hinihintay naming makapasok.”

The Adamson University women’s softball team showcased the true definition of being a champion on and off the diamond pitch.

Just last weekend, the Lady Falcons, who were left stranded in their dormitories in the school, decided to band together and pack goods to be distributed in various parts of Manila.

It is the team’s way of supporting the Vincentian priests’ Charity Over Virus Indifference and Despair (COVID) and Facemasks Cover Your Face Not Your Hearts program.

The Lady Falcons were supposed to begin their bid for the 10th straight University Athletic Association of the Philippines crown last Feb. 17. However, due to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic and the enhanced community quarantine that eventually followed, their tournament was suspended.
