ILOILO City – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) Region 6 has deactivated a total of 212,082 voter registrations as of April 15 this year.
Iloilo recorded the highest number of deactivated voters at 99,970, data from the Comelec-6 showed.
Other provinces’ number of deactivated voters are as follows:
* Aklan – 32,000
* Antique – 27,937
* Capiz – 42,703
* Guimaras – 9,607
Comelec-6 said the aforementioned voter registrations were deactivated because of failure to vote in two successive preceding regular elections, as shown by their voting records.
Atty. Dennis Ausan, director of the Comelec-6, explained that the deactivation process requires approval from the Election Registration Board (ERB) and affected voters were notified through a letter.
Those deactivated can still reactivate their registration by visiting the office of election officers in their respective cities or municipalities.
“Just visit the election officer’s office in your city or municipality to apply for reactivation if you wish to be reinstated on the voter’s list for the upcoming elections,” Ausan advised.
The Comelec’s registration drive and subsequent updates aim to ensure that all eligible voters can participate in the forthcoming electoral process.
Other reasons for the deactivation are the following:
* Sentenced by final judgment to suffer imprisonment for not less than one year
* Sentenced by final judgment of having committed any crime involving disloyalty to the duly constituted gov’t or any
* Declared by competent authority to be insane or incompetent
* Loss of Filipino citizenship
* Excluded per court order
* Failure to validate/PN
