MANILA – Sen. Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara’s seat will remain vacant once he assumes his new position as Department of Education (DepEd) secretary.

According to the Commission on Elections (Comelec), Angara is not to be replaced unless the Senate will request for a special elections to fill the spot.

“Unless there is a call from the Senate to call for a special election, the Senate seat of Senator Angara will remain vacant,” Garcia said in an interview on Tuesday afternoon.

Senate President Francis Escudero previously said there is no need to replace Angara when he assumes the Education secretary position.

“I don’t think you need to fill that in and chalk up additional expenses. Let us just wait for his term to expire,” Escudero said in an interview on Monday.

Angara was chosen by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. as the new Education secretary following the resignation of Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio.

Angara is on his second consecutive and last six-year term as senator./PN
