‘Comelec-Bacolod City office needs rehab’

BACOLOD City – The City Election Officer is requesting the city government to provide budget for the rehabilitation of their office.

Mavil Sia said the city government must also find them a temporary office should there be a rehabilitation.

Sia wrote to Mayor Evelio Leonardia regarding these requests after she received many complaints that their office along San Juan Street across the public plaza is “not senior citizen- and persons with disabilities-friendly.”

On top of this, their office is also located in a flood-prone area, Sia added.

“Our facility cannot accommodate all the applicants for the (voters’) registration,” the election officer lamented, adding that she hopes the city government could help them.

Sia said she already directed her staff to coordinate with the person in charge of the BAYS Center just across their office.

She said they were eyeing the center to be their temporary office.

The local government providing a local Comelec office with a budget for office rehabilitation is provided for under the Omnibus Election Code, Sia said.

Voters’ registration will be until Sept. 29. Today, a special voters’ registration will be held at CityMall in Barangay Mandalagan from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The registration is in view of next year’s midterm elections. The filing of certificates of candidacy will be on Oct. 11 to 17./PN
