MANILA – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) was urged to cancel the registration of party-lists identified with the Communist Party of the Philippines – New People’s Army (CPP-NPA).
Angela Aguilar filed a petition urging the Comelec to cancel the registrations of Makabayang Koalisyon ng Mamamayan, Bayan Muna, Anakpawis, Kabataan, Alliance of Concerned Teachers, General Assembly Binding Women for Reforms, Integrity, Equality, Leadership, and Action, with senatorial aspirant Neri Colmenares as the individual respondent.
Aguilar said Comelec has motu propio powers (under Republic Act 7941 or Party-List System Act) to cancel groups which “advocates violence or unlawful means to seek its goal” and “violates or fails to comply with laws, rules or regulations relating to elections.”
Aguilar stressed the campaign materials of Colmenares and his cohorts were displaced and in violation “of Comelec Resolution No. 10488 relating to the size of campaign materials, which should be two feet by three feet.”
She added “statements such as ‘Oust Duterte’ are exhibited in the tarpaulins, clearly indicating their unlawful intent to overthrow the duly constituted government and undermine the security of the country.”
The CPP-NPA was declared by United States, European Union, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte as a terrorist group. /PN
