Competition celebrates Aklan folk dances, songs

The province of Aklan has a rich cultural heritage. Among others, it has its own folk dances and songs handed down from generation to generation. The provincial government wants to preserve and propagate them.

KALIBO, Aklan – Folk tunes and dances of the province of Aklan will be highlighted in a cultural contest on Aug. 26.

On the main stage of ABL Sports Complex here, Aklanons will showcase their dance skills and vocal prowess in a friendly competition and win prizes.

The competition will be a rare display of the unique dance movements and songs celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the province, according to Albert Menez, chairperson of the Aklan Culture and Arts Foundation, Inc. (Acafi).

Menez said the competition is a collaboration between Acafi and the Aklan provincial government led by Gov. Jose Enrique Miraflores to promote and preserve for the future generations Aklan’s cultural identity in folk dances and songs.

The entries for the Aklanon folk song competition are the following:

* Malinao (Onga nga Owa Kabati)

* Tangalan (Jawili)

* Kalibo (Kaming Magmamani)

* Makato (Busay Salimuno)

* New Washington (Onga nga Owa Kabati)

* Batan  (Simoy Sa Kabukiran)

* Lezo (Lezo ro among Banwa)

* Numancia (Pamat Lawi)

* Banga (Onga nga Owa Kabati)

* Altavas (Altavas nga Banwa), Ibajay and Madalag

This year, 12 folk dance groups are competing. They are the following:

* Madalag (Inagung),

* Batan (Kinaransa)

* Malay (Panginhas)

* Kalibo (Kinaransa)

* Numancia (Saot it Madjanos)

* Makato (Kiriwkiw)

* Buruanga (Tiksiw)

* New Washington (Pang-Agihis)

* Banga (Saot sa Kasimuyawan)

* Altavas (Sagudsod De Mano)

* Ibajay (Panungya)

* Tangalan (Kiriwkiw)/PN
