ILOILO City – An estimated P3-million worth of raw palm oil weighing 25 tons was spilled when a container van fell on its side on Muelle Loney Street, City Proper district around 3:30 a.m. yesterday.
The container van was driven by Noel Cadayanon of Barangay Hibao-an, Mandurriao district.
According to Cadayanon, as he was going up the Arroyo bridge, the van’s fifth wheel came off, causing the container van to fall on its side. Luckily no one was injured.
Because of the accident, Muelle Loney Street was closed to traffic; it was dangerously slippery due to the spilled oil.
Residents and passersby rushed to the area to scoop up the spilled oil. However, according to the Iloilo City Operations Center, the oil is raw and not yet processed for cooking.
The matter also came to the attention of the Iloilo City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO).
CENRO head Engr. Niel Ravena said they are coordinating with barangay officials to disseminate information that the oil should not be sold in the market and street food vendors./PN
