BACOLOD City – A police officer shot and killed a man after an altercation on Wednesday at a vulcanizing shop in Barangay Robles, La Castellana, Negros Occidental.
The 20-year-old Jered Labiga allegedly tried to shoot Police Officer 3 Jose Michael Muñez after cussing out at him, municipal police said.
Muñez, a 33-year-old La Castellana native, was about to have his motorcycle’s tires repaired around 7:50 a.m. on Caduhada Street when Labiga and brother Joed, 18, parked their motorcycle behind him.
Startled, Muñez stood up and looked at the Labiga brothers.
That was when Labiga yelled at the officer, “Ano tulok mo? Daw gago ka magtulok! Sipa-on ta ka karon! Te, maano ka (What are you looking at? You look like an idiot! What if I kick you, what are you going to do about it),” police said.
Muñez told Labiga that he is a police officer.
Suddenly Labiga drew out a firearm from his sling bag. But Muñez was quick to pull out his own and fire at the former twice.
Joed tried to escape but Muñez ran after and eventually arrested him.
Labiga was a resident of Barangay 3, Moises Padilla.
He was facing a string of criminal charges — homicide in Moises Padilla, and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition and attempted homicide in Isabela — all filed this year, the Police Regional Office 18 said.
Muñez is an assistant traffic investigator for the La Castellana police station.
He was bound for work at the time of the shooting, said Chief Inspector Gary Alan Resuma, municipal police chief.
Muñez plans to file an attempted homicide charge against Joed, but the officer himself may face a homicide case if the Labiga family will press charges, Resuma stressed.
Both Muñez and Joed Labiga were detained in the La Castellana police station.
A .22-caliber firearm was recovered from Jered Labiga, while Muñez used his .9mm Glock 17 service firearm. All guns have been turned over to the crime laboratory for ballistic testing, police said./PN
