ILOILO – A 36-year-old man running amok with a knife at the Oton Public Plaza was shot by police yesterday, June 26.

Marjune Aprobitsal Millar, a pedicab driver and resident of Barangay Buray, Oton, Iloilo, was declared “dead upon arrival” at the Western Visayas Medical Center in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.

Oton Municipal Police Station (MPS) chief Police Major Fernand Limbungan said they received a call from Mayor Sofronio Fusin that a man was causing public alarm outside his residence in Barangay Buray. When the police arrived, the man had already left.

Around 6:30 a.m., Oton MPS received another call about a man allegedly harassing walkers and joggers at the town plaza.

When Police Corporal Mark Bernard Villanueva and Patrolman Desbaro arrived, they saw Millar brandishing a knife. While Villanueva tried calming Millar down, the latter allegedly charged at the police.

“Without any provocation, he attacked our policeman. That is why [Villanueva] decided to fire, and [Millar] was hit on his left side,” said Limbungan in Hiligaynon.

Recovered from the scene was a spent 9mm cartridge.

The victim’s wife confirmed to authorities that Millar was suffering from a nervous breakdown and had not eaten for three days./PN
