MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) dared the critics of its war on drugs to show proof that officers were behind the spate of drug-related killings.

That drug-related killings diminished since the war on drugs was suspended on Monday does not show that police officers were committing the killings, according to a PNP spokesman.

“Those claiming that policemen were behind drug-related killings should back their claims with evidence,” Dionardo Carlos told Panay News on Thursday.

“It is sad that the wrongdoings of the few are being taken for granted sa ating war on drugs,” he added. “Iyong gawain ng iba should not be associated with the PNP as a whole.”

In light of some officers’ alleged involved in the abduction and killing of a South Korean businessman, President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the PNP to suspend the war on drugs and focus on cleansing its ranks.

PNP chief Director General Ronald Dela Rosa, in response, dissolved all antidrug police units across the country.

“About doon sa zero killings (following the suspension of the war on drugs), baka sa sobrang takot o saya noong mga gumagawa noong killings ay wala munang nag-commit ng murder,” Carlos said.

Amnesty International released on Wednesday a report claiming that the PNP paid officers and assassins to kill alleged drug offenders.

The London-based human rights group said it found out that majority of the killings appears to be “systematic, planned and organized” by authorities.

“The police killings are driven by pressures from the top, including an order to ‘neutralize’ alleged drug offenders, as well as financial incentives,” the Amnesty report stated. “They have created an informal economy of death.”/PN
