ILOILO City – The police of San Miguel, Iloilo caught a man in the act of soliciting bets for Small Town Lottery (STL).

At the time of his arrest, STL in Iloilo province was not yet sanctioned by the provincial government or Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.

The suspect, 31-year-old Jayson Bernales, was collared in Barangay San Antonio, San Miguel around 11:30 a.m. yesterday. He was a resident of Barangay Binalud, Alimodian.

Cops seized from Bernales illegal gambling paraphernalia, a pen and P100.

Bernales faces a charge for violation of Republic Act (RA) 9287 that outlaws illegal gambling, specifically Section 3 (c).

If found guilty by the court for being a collector or agent (cabo, cobrador, coriador or variants thereof), Bernales faces the penalty of imprisonment from eight years and one day to 10 years.

Section 1 of RA 9287 states: “The State hereby condemns the existence of illegal gambling activities such as illegal numbers games as this has become an influential factor in an individual’s disregard for the value of dignified work, perseverance and thrift since instant monetary gains from it are being equated to success, thereby becoming a widespread social menace and a source of corruption.”/PN
