ILOILO City – Police officers who shot and killed two high-value illegal drug suspects in Barangay Tuburan, Zarraga, Iloilo were given medals.

Chief Superintendent Jose Gentiles, regional police director, led yesterday’s ceremonies at the Police Regional Office 6 recognizing officers working hard for the government’s antidrug campaign.

Chief Inspector Herbert Ballego, Zarraga police chief; Senior Inspector Ken Albert Lepsia, public safety platoon leader; Senior Inspector Robert Pancha, Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit chief; and seven police noncommissioned officers received Medals of Merit.

“We congratulate them for their effort and dedication to eradicate illegal drugs and neutralize high-value targets,” said Gentiles who personally pinned the medals to the officers.

Drug suspects Charles Lubao and Jaime Buaron II, both residents of Roxas City, were killed in a police operation around 12:20 p.m. on April 8.

Police recovered 23 plastic packs of suspected shabu from the suspects.

“We will not stop our antidrug operations. [We will go after] more high-value targets through Oplan Double Barrel Reloaded,” said Gentiles.

Police officers are not after raising the fatality count in the government’s war on drugs but will not hesitate to shoot if their lives are in danger, Gentiles stressed.

Lubao was armed with an M16 and tried to shoot the undercover officer who bought from him a plastic pack of suspected shabu, while Buaron had a hand grenade he threatened to lob at the officer’s backup, police said.
