ILOILO City – Policemen leaving their assigned posts will be charged administratively.

In a meeting with police precinct commanders, Senior Superintendent Henry Biñas, Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) director, stressed it was important for policemen to man their areas of assignment, especially this holiday season.

Biñas held a command conference with precinct commanders in preparation for the start of the traditional simbang gabi this Saturday.

He said he would task inspectors to check if policemen were indeed working in their assigned posts.

ICPO will be deploying “95 percent” of its police personnel to the field (churches, public plazas, malls, transport terminals, etc.)

“Our goal is zero crime this Yuletide season,” said Biñas.

Simbang gabi begins on Dec. 16. It is a nine-day dawn Mass in Philippine Catholic churches leading to Christmas day, Dec. 25.

Police assistance centers would be set up near churches, according to Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).

Simbang gabi originated in the early days of Spanish rule over the Philippines as a practical compromise for farmers, who began work before sunrise to avoid the noonday heat out in the fields.

Priests began to say Mass in the early mornings instead of the evening novenas more common in the rest of the Hispanic world, but the simbang gabi name stuck./PN
