KALIBO, Aklan – The Aklan Police Provincial Office (APPO) has intensified its campaign against loose firearms following the arrest of a gunrunner in Brgy. Balabag, Boracay Island.

APPO provincial director, Senior Supt. Samuel Nacion ordered his men in Boracay, as well as all police chiefs and the Public Safety Company, to conduct 24-hour checkpoint in all strategic areas.

Nacion also told his policemen to update the records of gun holders, including those who failed to renew their licenses.

“There is no letup for those who possess unlicensed firearms. We have to conduct a series of operations and we have to intensify our police visibility,” Nacion said.

The provincial director also said he will coordinate with other units and government forces to help them.

Wednesday night last week, Jerson Relojero, 29, of Brgy. Cabayugan, Malinao, Aklan was trying to sell high-powered firearms in Brgy. Balabag when elements of the APPO and the  Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) collared him for gunrunning.

The suspected gunrunner ran out of luck when a “prospect” he was talking to turned out to be a police intelligence officer or poseur-buyer.

Recovered from Relojero were a .9mm machine pistol and a caliber .357 Magnum revolver worth P36,000 and P6,000, respectively, plus assorted ammunitions.

According to Nacion, Relojero had been under surveillance for more than a week when a tipster informed them of his illegal activity in Boracay./PN
