BACOLOD City – Councilors asked top city officials to consider putting up separate lanes for motorcycles and bicycles on main highways.
The City Mayor’s Office, the Bacolod City Police Office’s Traffic Management Unit, the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office, and the office of Rep. Greg Gasataya should study the project, the Sangguniang Panlungsod said in a resolution.
Lack of such lanes “primarily contributes to the high occurrence of accidents on main highways and major streets,” Councilor Sonya Verdeflor said.
“Motorcycle accidents usually happen when the rider overtakes heavy trucks and private vehicles,” said the author of the resolution.
She cited a “triple vehicular accident” on Nov. 20 involving a motorcycle and two private vehicles that killed two persons and injured four others on the Bacolod-Silay Airport Access Road.
Traffic accidents likewise “alarmingly increased to a very high level, putting at risk the life and limb of many commuters every day,” the resolution stated.
“Of [such] accidents, a high percentage involves head-on collisions between huge and motorized vehicles and motorcycles or bicycles,” it said.
Such lanes are necessary “to protect motorcycle and bicycle riders from vehicular accidents on main highways and major streets,” said Verdeflor./PN
