ILOILO City – Councilor Jay Treñas got infected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), becoming the second city official to contract the viral illness.

The 37-year-old Sangguniang Panlungsod member is asymptomatic and observing strict quarantine for 15 days.

“Unfortunately, I tested positive for COVID-19. Fortunately, I am asymptomatic with no comorbidities,” Treñas, nephew of Mayor Jerry Treñas, wrote Friday on Facebook.

The City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit rolled out contract tracing for the councilor’s close contacts, according to Jeck Conlu, spokesperson of the city government’s COVID-19 team.

Conlu told Panay News that Treñas was among those who were swabbed at the Iloilo City Freedom Grandstand during the three-day mass testing of city hall officials and employees.

It was still unclear how the city official contracted the virus.

Late last month, Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon also tested positive for COVID-19. He was the first public official in the city who got infected.

Ganzon eventually recovered after being treated at a hospital. He tested negative for the virus on his second reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction test.

It was still also unclear how Ganzon contracted the coronavirus. But he said, “Mahimo resulta man ini sang akon padayon nga paglibot sa syudad agud makabulig man atipan sa sitwasyon sang aton palangga nga mga pumuluyo. Ini bangud indi ko man mapalagyuhan ang akon responsibilidad sa aton pumuluyo.”/PN
