COVID-19 cases in WV now over 9K but more patients recover

ILOILO City – In just three days, almost 1,000 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were recorded in Western Visayas to bring the region’s cumulative cases to 9,044 as of Sept. 19.

It was only on Sept. 16 when the region recorded 8,220 cases.

On Saturday, 240 more cases were confirmed.

But with thousands of cases having recovered, the region’s active cases as of this past weekend were just 3,570, according to the Department of Health (DOH) Region 6.

As to the case classification of the active cases, 69.16 percent were asymptomatic, 15. 83 percent had influenza-like illnesses while 5.89 percent were classified as severe acute respiratory illnesses.

According to DOH-6, the number of recovered cases was higher than the number of actives cases.

With 205 more recovered cases as of Sept. 19, the total number of recovered COVID-19 patients was now at 5,326.

Most of the recovered patients were returning overseas Filipinos, locally stranded individuals and Authorized Persons Outside Residence (1,621).

The others were from Bacolod City (1,545), Iloilo City (1,045), Iloilo province (505), Negros Occidental (404), Capiz (117), Guimaras (53), Antique (32), and Aklan (15).

The region’s COVID-19 death toll, on the other hand, increased to 148 with 10 additional deaths logged on Saturday.

By age group and sex, 21 to 30 years old both male and female were the most infected with COVID-19.

DOH-6 data also showed that 1,352 females and 1,341 males were infected by the virus.

Meanwhile, senior citizens 90 years old and above were the least infected – with only six cases each for both male and female./PN
