COVID-19 haunts hospitals, workplaces anew

ILOILO City – Several cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were logged in various hospitals here, workplaces and at the city hall this January.

Data from Jan. 1 to 24 released by the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) showed 373 healthcare workers (HCWs) both from public and private hospitals contracted COVID-19.

Sixty-three of the infected HCWs were doctors while 92 were nurses.

Other infected HCWs were medical technologists (30), pharmacists (11), nursing aides (19), radiology technicians (five), administrative staff (five), and others (148).

Of the infected HCWs, 87 were from Western Visayas Medical Center (WVMC) which included 23 doctors and 28 nurses, while 60 were from West Visayas State University Medical Center (WVSUMC) which included 20 doctors and 24 nurses.

Both WVMC and WVSUMC are COVID-19 referral hospitals in Western Visayas.

On the other hand, 27 of the infected HCWs were from Iloilo Mission Hospital; 11 from Iloilo Doctor’s Hospital; 10 each from St. Paul’s Hospital Iloilo and The Medical City Inc.; seven from Medicus Medical Center;  four from Iloilo Provincial Hospital; three from Qualimed Hospital; and two each from AMOSU and  Metro Iloilo Hospital and Medical Center Inc.

Sixteen HCWs from the City Health Office and two from the Department of Health (DOH) were infected with COVID-19 too.

Data also showed that 218 of the infected HCWs were fully vaccinated, 144 have complete vaccination; while 11 were unvaccinated.

Several offices and workplaces in this city also logged confirmed cases of COVID-19 among its employees. These included MORE Electric and Power Corp.  (21); Central Philippine University (20); Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (18); Commission on Elections (11); HGS (11); Department of Public Works and Highways (10); Office of Civil Defense (10); Department of Interior and Local Government (five); Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (five); Philippine National Police (five); and business process outsourcing companies Asurion with 36 cases; Legato (23); Lead Generation (20); iQOR (18); Nearsol (eight); and Transcom (five).

On the other hand, at the city hall, 20 offices got COVID-19-infected personnel.

Between Jan. 1 to 24, 132 employees of the Iloilo City Government contracted coronavirus.

The City Mayor’s Office (CMO) had the most number of infected employees at 49, followed by the Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office with 13, and Iloilo City Emergency Response Team/CDRRMO with eight.

The City Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO) recorded seven cases; City Accountant’s Office had three; City Administrator’s Office had two cases; and one case each from the sixth floor, Office of Councilor Love-love Baronda, Local Economic and Enterprise Office (LEEO), Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs, City Budget Office, Local Civil Registrar, ISISU,  Sangguniang Panlungsod, City Assessor’s Office, City Department of Interior and Local Government Office, City Treasurer’s Office, Business Processing and Licensing Office, Local Economic Investment and Promotion Office, and Public Information Office./PN
