ILOILO – As of Wednesday morning, 60.65 percent of the beds dedicated to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients in provincial government-run hospitals were occupied.

There were 813 authorized beds in capitol-run hospitals wherein 70 percent of these or 569 beds were dedicated for coronavirus patients, data from the Hospital Management Office (HMO) showed.

Severe cases and those in critical condition, meanwhile, are brought to tertiary hospitals in Iloilo City.

The hospitals also posted a 44.45 percent occupancy rate for non-COVID beds, according to acting provincial administrator Atty. Suzette Mamon.

For Mamon, the COVID bed occupancy rate of the capitol-run hospitals was “manageable”.

The provincial government was in the preparatory stage of establishing a critical care unit at the IPH, she revealed.

Ang minimum requirement sa critical care unit per IATF-MEID (Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases) is three beds, amo ‘na anay sa IPH ang three-bed capacity ang i-establish ta subong,” Mamon said.

The district hospitals also have no Intensive Care Unit (ICU) facility as all the capitol-run hospitals are on Level 1.

The critical care unit aims to decongest tertiary hospitals in Iloilo City.

Mamon said district hospitals and the IPH have enough medicines and equipment to cater to mild and moderate coronavirus cases.

The provincial government also helps the Western Visayas Medical Center (WVMC) in Mandurriao, Iloilo City in terms of human resource, Mamon said in an interview over DZMM TeleRadyo.

“What we are doing in WVMC we are complementing… mayroon kaming mga (more than 30) health personnel pinapasahod ng province. We also providing ventilators so that they can expand their capacity para ma-cater ang pasyente na kailangan ng critical care,” added Mamon./PN
