ILOILO City – A total of 34 residents at the Carmelite Monastery and Convent on Jereos Street, Barangay Lopez Jaena Norte, La Paz district tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). These include 25 nuns and nine other staff.
According to Iloilo City COVID-19 Team spokesperson Jeck Conlu, a total of 45 residents were swabbed after an index case (a nun) tested positive for the viral disease.
Of the infected residents, six were symptomatic, including the index case.
The index case was swabbed Thursday last week after exhibiting symptoms. Results came out on Friday and all close contacts were subsequently swabbed the following day.
The infected residents were isolated at a facility.
Conlu said they were closely monitoring the cases.
Contact tracing is ongoing.
The positive cases in the monastery were among the 104 confirmed cases logged by the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit on Saturday./PN
