TO BE proud for its humble beginnings for being recognized as the country’s first agricultural learning institution, the Central Philippines State University (CPSU) in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, has continuously embraced agriculture as its flagship course.
Through the leadership of CPSU President Dr. Aladino C. Moraca, the institution has strengthened its advocacy of providing assistance to the farmers within the city of Kabankalan and the whole province of Negros Occidental in terms of trainings and lectures on natural ways of farming.
Following this objective, the CPSU has regularly conducted practical lectures, trainings, hands-on demonstrations, and offered assistance to the local farmers regarding practical farming practices, which are environment-friendly and economically-feasible.
The CPSU is likewise extending assistance by sharing technologies developed by the experts of the institution to the local community, which include practical solar water pumping systems, solar panels, farming tools, among many others
Just recently, the CPSU has collaborated with the city government of Kabankalan and the provincial government of Negros Occidental by providing training to the farmers through the Farmers Field School (FFS).
This became possible after the Region-6 office of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA-6) has granted the Certificate of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Program Registration to the CPSU to offer programs in Organic Agriculture Production NC II for 232 hours.
The 16-week training program provides comprehensive skills and knowledge to the local farmers in practising organic agriculture.
TESDA’s recognition to the CPSU’s advocacy and competence is considered as an honor and milestone in the institution’s unceasing efforts in promoting organic farming.
Meanwhile, the Bayanihan Clean-up Drive was recently conducted at the main campus of the CPSU in Barangay Camingawan, Kabankalan City through the efforts of Moraca.
This is in support to the World Environment Day 2020 with the theme “Time for Nature” that focuses on the conservation and protection of natural resources, flora and fauna.
Being an advocate of environmental protection and organic agriculture, Moraca has urged all the CPSU personnel to take part in the legacy of protecting the environment and to make it as a principle to be handed down to the generations to come.
“The target is to make the campus a zero plastic university in the next two to three years to come,” he pointed out.
Moraca’s objective is for the CPSU personnel to take the lead in protecting not just the campus premises but the environment as well.
According to Moraca, this can be attained through simple acts of picking-up small plastic wrappers and disposing the garbage properly, which will eventually become a model for the students to emulate.
“When the students will return to the campus, the ‘clean and green’ ambiance would greet them and hopefully would prompt them to also do their part in maintaining cleanliness by avoiding irresponsible waste disposal like littering,” he says.
The whole day activity has inspired everyone in the campus to help clean their respective areas by simply picking up plastic bottles and wrappers, and in beautifying their surroundings./PN
