BACOLOD City – Three people died when a jeepney crashed against a tricycle on Mabinay Road in Barangay 9, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.
Superintendent Rhea Santos, Kabankalan City police chief, identified the casualties as tricycle driver Edgar Fernandez Capinig, 56, of Barangay 5, Kabankalan City, and his passengers Liezel Garzula, 41, of Barangay Camingawan, Kabankalan City, a teacher at Central Philippine State University, and Roselle Bartolome, 20, of Barangay Tampalon, Kabankalan City.
The crash happened at around 5:50 p.m. on Wednesday when the jeepney – driven by Fernando Mahilum, 35, also of Barangay Camingawan – was overtaking a preceding vehicle, police investigation showed.
Police said the tricycle was heading to Villa Concha Subdivision at the time.
From what the police so far gathered, the jeepney passengers asked the driver to slow down but the latter did not heed them.
Because of the impact, the driver was thrown off the tricycle while his two passengers were pinned inside.
The victims were taken to the Lorenzo D. Zayco District Hospital where Dr. Dexter John Lopez pronounced them “dead on arrival.”
Mahilum turned himself in to the police. He was facing a reckless imprudence resulting to multiple homicide charge./PN
