MANILA – Kent Salado came up with crucial hits in the endgame as the Racal Tile Masters Ceramica scored an 89-84 win over Wangs Basketball Couriers in the 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup on Thursday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
With the Ceramica hanging to a one-point edge at 75-74 following a basket by Thomas Torres, Salado uncorked eight straight points to stretch the lead to 83-78 with over two minutes remaining in the game.
The Couriers came to within three points twice with last at 85-82 on a basket by Negrense John Tayongtong, but free throws by Sidney Onwubere and Torres sealed the win for the Ceramica.
Salado finished the match with 14 points, with 10 coming in the final quarter, for the Ceramica, which remained on top of the standings with an unblemished 4-0 win-loss record.
Jackson Corpuz led the way with double-double 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Onwubere, Rey Nambatac and Allan Mangahas combined for 27 points for the Racal.
“Hindi pa masyadong evident yung adjustment nila sa style of play dito sa D-League,” said Ceramica head coach Jerry Codinera. “Depensa ang malaking bagay sa amin kaya dapat aggressive kami.”
Rey Publico top-scored with 16 points, while veteran Marlon Gomez and John Von Tamberling had 14 and 13 points, respectively, for the Couriers, which suffered its third straight loss to slide down to a 1-3 slate./PN
