MANILA – Rachel Anne Daquis has been tapped as the team captain of the Philippine Superliga (PSL) Manila squad set to compete in the 2016 FIVB Women’s Club World Championship from Oct. 18 to 23 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Daquis, one of the mainstays of the RC Cola-Army Lady Troopers, is among the seven seasoned Filipina players who will clash with the world’s best clubs in the week-long volleyball spectacle.
According to PSL president Ramon Suzara, Daquis was chosen due to her valuable international experience and the leadership that she will bring to the team set to feature seven reinforcements.
“We opted to appoint Rachel because of her leadership and ability to reach out to both local and foreign players. Aside from scoring, she will also to provide leadership and spearhead the development of chemistry among team members,” Suzara said.
Daquis, a former Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws star, welcomed the appointment, saying that she will do her best to make the country’s participation in this prestigious tourney both competitive and enjoyable.
“I am truly humbled by the trust and support given by the management and my teammates,” said the 28-year-old Daquis. “Rest assured that I will do my best to guide the team and represent the country in this very important tournament.”
Aside from Daquis, also in the PSL Manila lineup are Guimaras-native Jovelyn Gonzaga, Jaja Santiago, Mika Reyes, Jennylyn Reyes, Kim Fajardo, and Frances Molina.
Serving as reinforcements are Tinchaya Boonlert of Thailand, Ekaterina Krivets of Russia, Lynda Morales of Puerto Rico, Yevgeniya Nyukhalova of Ukraine, Lindsay Stalzer and Stephanie Niemer of the United States, and Yuri Fukuda of Japan.
