BACOLOD City – Several organizations are encouraging Negrenses to join the nationwide protest today against the burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes’ Cemetery).
Those participating are urged to wear a black shirt in keeping with the “Black Friday” rally, according to Christian Tuayon, secretary-general of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) Negros.
“Adlaw ini sang kaakig kag kainit (This is a day of anger and vexation),” Tuayon said in a radio interview.
Aside from Bayan, other militant groups, victims of human rights abuses during martial law and the Escalante massacre, and the youth, among others, will gather at the Fountain of Justice on Luzuriaga-Araneta streets.
At 1 p.m. they will march from the San Sebastian Cathedral to the Fountain of Justice, at the old city hall. Before that, a forum will be held at the Vianney Building next to the cathedral at 10 a.m.
Tuayon said they want to “show the Duterte administration that we did not forget or want to revise history” and “uphold the people’s power to oust a dictator.”
Marcos was interred on Nov. 18 in what many described as a sneak burial prompted by permission from President Rodrigo Duterte and the Supreme Court ruling that removed all legal impediments against it.
Tuayon said this afternoon’s protest will be nationwide.
Despite the threat of tropical depression “Marce,” the protest will push through, he stressed. He advised those who will join to bring umbrellas or raincoats./PN
