MANILA – The Far Eastern University Tamaraws got back on the winning trackin the UAAP 79 men’s seniors basketball tournament with a 67-59 win overthe University of the East Red Warriors on Sunday night at the Smart-AranetaColiseum.
Monbert Arong led the way with a career-high 16 points, including six inthe final quarter, for the defending champion Tamaraws, which moved up to 2-2 tying with the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers and Ateneo Blue Eagles.
Axel Inigo added 12 markers, while Raymar Jose finished with double-double 11 points and 22 rebounds for the Tamaraws, which played without injured veterans Richard Escoto and Wendell Comboy.
“It’s a test of character for us. I was looking of how we are able tobounce back after a loss (to Ateneo),” said Tamaraws head coach Nash Racela. “I am also glad because we did it without two of our rotationplayers.”
The Tamaraws claimed the lead for most part of the match withits largest at 12 points, 58-46, early in the final quarter, but the RedWarriors refused to give up as it rallied to within seven points on an Alvin Pasaol conversion.
The Red Warriors came to withing62-59 following a triple by Clark Derige but his teammate Wilson Bartolome committed a disqualifying foul on Tamaraws’ Ron Dennison.
Jojo Trinidad drained two free throws from the foul of Bartolome to extend the lead to 64-59, a basket by Jose in the next possessionthen sealed the victory for the Tamaraws.
Mark Olayon was the lone bright spot with 12 markers to lead the wayfor the Red Warriors, which slid down to 0-3 in the standings to ties with the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons./PN
