BACOLOD City – The number of dengue cases in this capital city increased 107 percent from January to April 6 this year, according to the City Health Office (CHO).
CHO Environment Sanitation Division head Dr. Grace Tan said they have listed 400 cases with one death this year compared to last year’s190 with three deaths.
The highest number of cases was recorded in Barangay Estefania with 39.
It was followed by Barangay Taculing with 29 cases.
The total dengue cases are also comprised of Barangay Pahanocoy, 28; Barangay Tangub, 26; Barangay Handumanan, 25; Barangay Mansilingan, 24; Barangay Granada, 23; Barangays Singcang-Airport, Mandalagan and Alijis with 22 cases each; Barangay Villamonte, 21; Barangay Bata, 16; Barangay Sum-ag, 15, and Barangay Banago, 13.
Tan noted dengue is not just an illness during rainy months, but also in summer period because most of the households still store water inside their houses.
According to the World Health Organization, the incidence of dengue has grown dramatically around the world in recent decades.
The number of cases reported increased from 2.2 million in 2010 to over 3.34 million in 2016. Although the full global burden of the disease is uncertain, the initiation of activities to record all dengue cases partly explains the sharp increase in the number of cases reported in recent years./PN
