ILOILO City – A two-year-old girl from Barangay Tanza Baybay, City Proper district died of dengue hemorrhagic fever.
This brings the total number of dengue deaths in the city to three this year.
According to the City Health Office (CHO), the child died on April 1 while being treated at the Western Visayas Medical Center (WVMC) in Mandurriao district.
The CHO added the child’s cause of death was septic shock secondary to sepsis, pneumonia, severe dengue, and multiple congenital anomaly.
The patient had fever for two days with shortness of breath prior to hospital admission.
She was brought to WVMC on March 30 and eventually expired on April 1.
Data from the Department of Health Region 6 showed Iloilo City logged 16 cases of dengue from Jan. 1 to April 1 this year.
Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection causing a severe flu-like illness that could be fatal if not managed well. Its carriers are day-biting mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti) that breed in clear, stagnant water./PN
