Dengue kills 8 in antique

Rubber tires and empty plastic and glass containers may collect stagnant water where dengue-carrying mosquitoes may breed. Health authorities are encouraging the public to get rid of these to prevent the spread of the viral disease. AFP

SAN JOSE, Antique – Eight people in Antique province died of dengue in almost eight months, according to the Provincial Health Office (PHO).

The fatalities were recorded in six municipalities from January to Aug. 16.

“We have three deaths from San Jose and one each from Anini-y, Hamtic, Valderrama, Culasi, and Patnongon,” said Dr. Ric Noel Naciongayo, provincial health officer.

Naciongayo urged the public to prevent the spread of the viral disease by cleaning the surroundings – specifically targeting mosquito breeding sites.

Dengue hemorrhagic fever is transmitted through mosquito bites.

Dengue-carrying mosquitoes – Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus – breed in stagnant water, ditches, tree holes, discarded tires, flower vases, and other empty containers that collect rainwater.

Naciongayo also encouraged the application of the 4S strategy to combat the disease.

The 4S stands for Search and destroy mosquito breeding grounds, Self-protective measures, Seek early medical consultation, and Say no to indiscriminate fogging.

The fatalities from January to Aug. 16 this year were higher than the three deaths recorded in the same period in 2016.

However, the PHO’s Supervising Sanitary Inspector Tessie M. Vergara noted that the 356 dengue cases recorded so far this year were lower than the 1,157 recorded in the same period last year.

Gov. Rhodora J. Cadiao has directed the PHO to intensify the campaign against dengue, said Naciongayo. (PIA/PN)
