Department of Environment and Natural Resources-6 Regional Director Jim Sampulna affix his signature to the Peldge of Commitment as a symbol of his support to the National Advocacy Campaign on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation.
THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 6 launched the National Advocacy Campaign Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation on June 25.
The said initiative, in partnership with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), was simultaneously launched in other parts of the region such as in the provinces of Aklan, Capiz, Antique and Negros Occidental.
The Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Advocacy Campaign is one of the national programs of the DENR to address the ill effects of climate change and global warming.
Two strategies are in order to address the impacts of climate change, mitigation and adaption.
In her presentation during the launching program, PIA-6 Regional Director Atty. Janet Mesa defined mitigation as the reduction of harmful greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
On the other hand, adaptation is the adjustment in natural human systems in response to expected climate stimuli or their effects which moderates harm or exploits beneficial opportunities.
DENR aims to have a thematic advocacy brand for all the Department’s environmental programs and efforts; weaken public’s apathy to climate change concerns and environmental agenda; popularize and strengthen adaptation and mitigation measures in response to climate change; and inspire and motivate the public to cooperate and participate in solving the issues on climate change.
To ensure the success of the advocacy campaign, DENR will engage the participation of the youth as its active proponents. They will also conduct school caravans to hold symposia to promote value and behavioral formation to the “near future” generation.
Moreover, they will also be aligning other environmental concerns and will be asking the participation and cooperation of other institutions, organizations and groups to intensify the advocacy.
As a symbol of their commitment to the advocacy, DENR-6 led by Regional Director Jim Sampulna, representatives from PIA-6 and the media affixed their signatures to the Pledge of Commitment board.
