BORACAY – Stakeholders need a “reset button” to fix the environmental problems in this popular island destination within six months.

This is possible if there is political will. If none, Boracay may face closure, as what President Rodrigo Duterte warned.

In line with this, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) regional director Jim O Sampulna encouraged the stakeholders to make immediate moves to solve the island’s environmental woes.

“Why wait for six months if we could fix the island in two months? If Boracay totally closes down, billions of pesos will be lost. Maraming taong magugutom. Maraming mawawalan ng trabaho kasama na ang trabaho ko,” Sampulna said.
At least 51 establishments in Boracay were given notices for violating the Philippine Clean Air Act of 2004.

The law requires establishments to connect to appropriate sewerage lines.
The violating establishments will be under the monitoring of the Environmental Management Bureau-Pollution Adjudication Board for possible sanctions or in worst case, closure.

“Are we going to destroy Boracay and make it a commercial zone or restore Boracay to its former state?” Sampulna said. “We have to do something…it is in our hands. You destroy Boracay, you destroy the Philippines. The island is the crown jewel of the country’s tourism.”

He added, “Kapag hindi maayos ang Boracay, baka ipasara niya. If the President sees na ang mga stakeholders ay kayang i-manage ang Boracay at kung magtutulungan ang mga tao, he might change his mind.” (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
