ILOILO City – Amid the worldwide novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) scare and following its confirmed cases in the country, the 2020 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet is heading to a postponement anew until further notice after the Department of Education (DepEd) announced the suspension of all scheduled national and regional events that involve students.

DepEd secretary Leonor Briones made the statement on March 8 after the Department of Health announced the increase of the COVID-19 cases in the country, which is now at 20.

“In light of recent developments in COVID-19, DepEd is suspending all scheduled national and regional events involving students from different localities, such as the Palaro Regional Meets, until further notice,” Briones said.

The 2020 WVRAA Meet was supposed to be held on March 21 to 28 in Makato, Aklan province after it was postponed from its original schedule of February due to the same reason.

WVRAA serves as the qualifier for this region’s student-athletes to play in the Palarong Pambansa – the biggest sporting event for elementary and high school students. It also provides them the opportunities to be recruited by Manila-based schools and universities./PN
