MANILA – The Department of Education (DepEd) is set to propose the formal cancellation of the 2020 Palarong Pambansa due to the ongoing scare of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the country.

DepEd undersecretary Annalyn Sevilla said the final decision to make the biggest sporting event for elementary and high school students not take place will be announced anytime soon.
“DepEd will propose the cancelation of 2020 Palarong Pambansa subject to approval of Palarong Pambansa Board via ad referendum,” said Sevilla.

Marikina City was supposed to host this year’s Palarong Pambansa but was postponed by mayor Marcy Teodoro after the city confirmed its first COVID-19 case last month.

Before Marikina, the original host of the event was Occidental Mindoro. Due to the damages brought by Typhoon Tisoy, however, the officials were prompted to change the venue./PN
