Devotees pray to the glass-encased pilgrim image of Señor Santo Niño de Cebu outside the San Jose de Placer Church at Plaza Libertad, Iloilo City. Every year, the Cebu-based pilgrim image visits Iloilo City for the Dinagyang Festival. JOSELITO VILLASIS/PN

ILOILO City – Devotees welcomed yesterday the pilgrim image of Señor Santo Niño de Cebu for the annual Dinagyang Festival.

The image touched down at the Iloilo Airport from Cebu around 7 a.m. It proceeded to the University of San Agustin where a mass and veneration was held at 12 noon.

Yesterday afternoon, the pilgrim image was moved to the San Jose de Placer Church for the reenactment of the first Dinagyang.

Dinagyang is the Hiligaynon word for revelry or merrymaking. The festival started in January 1967 when a replica of Señor Santo Niño de Cebu was brought to the San Jose de Placer Church.

The image, accompanied by devotees from Cebu, was enthusiastically received by the Ilonggos who danced on the streets of the city to the tune of rumbling drums.

While Dinagyang came to be known as a socio-cultural extravaganza bankrolled by the city government, San Jose de Placer Church makes sure the yearly festivity remains true to its religious beginnings by lining up a series of church-based activities. Among these are:

* 10 a.m. healing mass and lunch date for the aged, sick and abandoned – Jan. 22 to 28
* pilgrim image to visit St. Therese College-Magdalo Campus, Iloilo provincial capitol, St. Joseph School of Iloilo, Oton Church and Trapiche, Oton – Jan. 23
* pilgrim image to visit St. Therese College-Tigbauan, Peñaflorida Factory, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University, and Robinsons Place Iloilo – Jan. 24
