ILOILO City – Cong. Jerry Treñas’ phone records could clear him and force Councilor Plaridel Nava to make a public apology over allegations that the congressman wanted him dead.
Yesterday, Nava challenged Treñas to bare phone records, especially between April and May last year.
According to the councilor, businessman Rommel Ynion heard suspected drug lord Melvin “Boyet” Odicta Sr. and Treñas talking about the alleged assassination plot some two weeks before the May 2016 elections.
In a radio interview, Nava said he was willing to apologize to Treñas if the congressman’s phone records would show no such phone call was made.
The allegation drew out a vehement denial from Treñas.
“Waay ko kakilala kay Mr. Melvin Odicta. I have never talked to him. I don’t know him. Waay ‘ko ya relasyon sa iya,” the congressman told Panay News.
Nava said he would be asking the help of the National Bureau of Investigation.
Meanwhile, Ynion said there was nothing political in the disclosure of the alleged assassination plot against Nava.
“Nothing personal, nothing political. Waay man ko ambition,” said Ynion, a defeated candidate for councilor in last year’s elections.
It was from Ynion that Nava learned last week about the alleged assassination plot.
According to the businessman, the information was supposed to be for Nava only. The councilor, however, took it to social media.
“Do not misinterpret my action. Ginhambal ko sa radio interview nga waay ko sang intention nga i-expose ini sa media. I am only answering interviews kay si Nava ‘ya nag-expose sina,” said Ynion.
Treñas dismissed the allegation as preposterous and challenged Nava to prove it. He said he would resign as congressman if this is proven true.
Ynion said he is willing to execute an affidavit to support Nava’s plan to file a complaint against Treñas before the House ethics committee.
“Wala problema. Ang affidavit based lang sa kamatuoran,” said Ynion. “Kon indi ta pagsuportahan I will look like a liar. Asta lang ko da ya eh, wala na ko iban nga involvement. I’m just being a…daw resource person lang. Nothing personal, nothing political. Waay man ko ambition.”
According to Nava, it was during a dinner at Ynion’s restaurant in Metro Manila on March 8 when he learned about the alleged assassination plot.
That was the first time they talked after a long while, said Nava, because he and Ynion had a falling out last year during the elections. They rekindled their friendship this year.
“I don’t have any plans, actually. Ako ya gasabat man lang ko sang mga pamangkot. Waay gid ko plano ah. Plano ko lang ya sabton ko lang ang tanan nga pamangkot as honestly as I can,” said Ynion.
Whether people believe him or not doesn’t bother him, added the businessman who also ran for mayor in 2013 but lost.
“Bahala kamo kon mapati sa akon. Ako ya kon ginapamangkot nagasabat man lang sang panan-awan ko nga kamatuoran,” said Ynion.
He has no obligation nor will he exert effort to convince everyone to believe in him, he added.
Ynion said he sought a meeting with Odicta last year to clarify the alleged death threats that he was getting.
Ynion said he had several impressions during his meeting with Odicta, one of which was the apparent ties of the drug lord to Treñas.
The congressman denied knowing Odicta.
“Thirty years na ako sa pulitika. Waay ko may ginpapatay, nga-a all of a sudden matawag ako sa tawo nga indi ko kilala kag ipapatay ang tawo nga waay gani ko kalian sang buot? Masyado ka imposible nga istorya,” said Treñas.
Odicta was shot to death by a still unidentified gunman in August last year at the Caticlan jetty port in Malay, Aklan./PN
