DID YOU KNOW? Antique, From columnist to mayor

Antique

Antique, an elongated stretch of land occupying the entire western side of Panay Island, is one of the provinces where Panay News has been circulating continuously since 1981.

One of the biggest stories from this province that the newspaper reported was the assassination of former governor Evelio Javier in February 1986, just five years after Panay News started publishing.

Among Antique’s attractions are the centuries-old Anin i-y Church, Nogas Island and Mararison Island which have long stretches of white sand beaches.

From columnist to mayor

The late mayor of Bacolod City, Oscar Verdeflor, used to write a column for Panay News. It was named
“Maverick”. He was actually wiring for the paper long before he became mayor.

“Oca”, as he was fondly called by friends and colleagues, served as Bacolod City mayor from July 1, 1998 to March 13, 2001 and thus had to temporarily stop writing. He resumed his column after his stint at the Bacolod City Hall.
