Dike collapses due to heavy rains

CULASI, Antique – The old dike along the Bacong River in Brgy. Camancijan here collapsed on Sunday following the heavy rains brought by typhoon “Quinta.”

On Monday, 56 families from the barangay were evacuated due to the rising water level.

Because of the incident, punong barangay Lucelle Yap appealed to improve the infrastructure to solve the concern of the residents, especially during rainy season.

“Gaapelar daad ako nga kon maremedyuhan daad ang old dike nga dya ukon ma-replace ang old dike nga dya kang bag-o. Gaapelar gid ako nga ma-budget-an ang old dike nga dya para ‘di malanas ang mga tawo dya sa Camancijan… Indi lang kami dya sa Camancijan ang maapektuhan, pati ang banwa gid ang maapektuhan (We are appealing to provide remedy or replace the old dike with a new one. We are appealing [to authorities] to allot budget to prevent further damage to the people of Camancijan. Not only here in Camancijan, but the town of Culasi, as well),” said Yap.

On Tuesday, Governor Rhodora Cadiao visited the evacuees and brought food supplies.

She also inspected the current state of the old dike, which was a project of her father, former governor Josue Cadiao.

Culasi has another dike, the 20-million mega dike, which was inaugurated on June 2018.

According to some residents, the new mega dike might also give in due to the strong water current, possibly flooding the entire town of Culasi./PN
