DILG files admin raps vs 10 mayors remiss in road clearing directive

MANILA – The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has filed administrative charges against 10 mayors for failing to comply with the national government’s order to clear roads of any illegal obstructions.

The mayors of Baco, Oriental Mindoro; Pili, Camarines Sur; Ginatilan, Cebu; Pagsanghan, Samar; Aurora and Lapuyan, Zamboanga Del Sur; Sagay and Guinsiliban, Camuigin; Manticao, Misamis Oriental; and Caraga, Davao Oriental were all charged before the Office of the Ombudsman with administrative cases for gross neglect of duty and grave misconduct.

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said the mayors were not able to “satisfactorily” answer the Show Cause Orders issued by the agency.

“This is just the first batch of cases to be filed and we will file the succeeding batches as soon as our lawyers have finished reviewing the validation reports and the corresponding answers by the mayors,” said Año in a statement.

DILG issued Memorandum Circular 2019-121 last year, which is a formal directive to local government units to clear roads and sidewalks from obstructions within 60 days. The directive came after President Rodrigo Duterte asked local officials to reclaim public spaces during his State of the Nation Address last July. (CNN PH/PN)
