ROXAS City – Residents in island barangays in Capiz have undergone a storm surge and evacuation simulation drill.
They were taught how to respond to disasters and emergencies, specifically storm surges resulting from typhoons.
The participants were from the island villages of Bantigue and Butacal in Panay, and Guba and Manapao in Pontevedra.
The Aksyon Tabang-Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office conducted a briefing.
The HEKS Swiss Church Aid, an international organization helping identified barangays hit by the 2013 super typhoon “Yolanda,” facilitated the drill.
According to Francisco Megoc, HEKS’ disaster risk reduction management (DDRM) program manager, the activity aims to enhance the locals’ disaster risk management capabilities and resiliency.
DRRM is one of the programs the organization provides to its beneficiary barangays, said Megoc.
Meanwhile, Megoc said three two-storey evacuation centers will be turned over to three barangays before the end of the year: Binaobawan, Pilar; Bantigue, Panay; and Manapao, Pontevedra.
Earlier the HEKS also organized a typhoon and flood simulation exercise in barangays Manhoy, Duyoc and Quinayuya in Dao. (PIA/PN)
