BACOLOD City – Mayor Monico Puentevella called on Bacolodnons to display the Philippine flag to commemorate the 116th anniversary of the country’s independence.
May 28 until June 12 (Independence Day) has been declared by the national government as National Flag Days.
The theme of the 116th Philippine Independence Day celebration is Pagsunod sa Pag Yapak ng mga Dakilang Pilipino Tungo sa Malawakan at Permanenteng pagbabago.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP), meanwhile, passed a resolution urging all learning institutions, offices, agencies and instrumentalities of the government including the barangays, business establishments, private homes and major streets to display the Philippine flag from May 28 to June 30, 2014.
Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr., resolution author, cited among others an observation of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines regarding the Filipino people’s declining reverence for the Philippine flag.
“While the forefathers of this nation fought their way to repeal the Flag Law of 1907 that barred Filipinos from displaying their flag, many Filipinos today do not respect the flag,” he lamented.
The resolution also said love of country is best manifested in the way the Philippine flag is given honor and respect.
The National Flag Days serves as a reminder that the Filipinos belong to one nation enjoying the benefits of sovereignty united by the ideals of democracy, Gamboa stressed./PN
