ROXAS City – A 36-year-old distressed man attempted to commit suicide by jumping from the top of a coconut tree.

Crisanto Relato of Barangay Talonclimbed up the 60-feet tree around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday after learning that the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) will take his 6-year-old daughter from him and put her in his live-in partner’s custody.

Relato was allegedly violent toward his live-in partner, 28-year-old Joan Traje, whom he accused of being unfaithful, according to Rose Olabeja of the city police’s women and children desk.

Traje is pregnant, but Relato do not believe it is his child because they were “practicing withdrawal.” The pregnancy was a cause of the couple’s frequent misunderstanding, said Olabeja.

Later, Traje left Relato and reported to the CSWDO.

With the help of the police, the CSWDO informed Relato that they will take his daughter and give her to Traje.

After which, Relato did not eat and sleep for two days, his family claimed.

“He was so affected,” said his mother, Vilma. “We were shocked when our neighbors told us he was jumping off a tree.”
His family pleaded for him to come down, but Relato ignored them. He stayed up the coconut tree for more than three hours.
Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) personnel laid a net under the tree.

The Relato family and the authorities appealed to Traje to ask Relato to come down and promise him that they will talk things over. Traje complied. Relato came down.
Traje and the BFP then took him to the Roxas Memorial Provincial Hospital for a checkup.
As of this writing, Relato and Traje were back in their house with their daughter./PN
