MANILA – The De La Salle University Lady Spikers begins its quest for back-to-back championships when the UAAP Season 79 beach volleyball begins today at the Sands SM By The Bay in Pasay City.
The Lady Spikers, which will be bannered by Desiree Cheng and Christine Tiamzon will face the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws’ Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza in a rematch of last season’s finals at 8 a.m.
The Lady Spikers, which ruled the Season 78 behind Fajardo, Tiamzon and Cyd Demecillo, will return to the sand court at 12 noon against the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons’ Diana Carlos and Ilongga Arielle Estrañero.
The Lady Spikers’ biggest threat for a back-to-back tiara are the Lady Tamaraws tandem of Negrense Pons and Atienza, who ruled the one-day league at the Cantada Sports Center over the weekend.
The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses will once again rely on Cherry Rondina and Jem Gutierrez in hopes of regaining the beach volleyball crown and bounce back from finishing outside the Final Four last season.
The Ateneo De Manila University Lady Eagles will turn to returning Michelle Morente and Ria Lo as it vies for the elusive championship, which it failed to achieve last season despite lining up Alyssa Valdez and Negrense Bea Tan.
The Lady Eagles and the Golden Tigresses will face off at 8:30 a.m, followed by the Lady Maroons-Adamson University Lady Falcons match at 9 a.m. and National University Lady Bulldogs-University of the East Lady Warriors tussle at 9:30 a.m.
In the men’s division, Marck Espejo will have Ish Polvorosa as his new partner as the Ateneo Blue Eagles guns goes for a back-to-back title romp. The Blue Eagles bagged its first title last year behind Espejo and Ysay Marasigan./PN
