MANILA – De La Salle University Lady Spikers rode on the exploits of rookie Angel Canino as they defeated the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses, 22-25, 27-25, 25-16, 25-21, in the 2022 Shakey’s Super League on Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

The Bacolod City native fired a game-high 25 points, on 19 attacks, four service aces and two blocks, as the Lady Spikers moved to a 2-0 carryover win-loss record in Pool F.

Jolina Dela Cruz also made her presence felt from the second set onwards to finish with 11 markers while Thea Gagate had nine points for the UAAP Season 84 women’s volleyball runner ups.

Canino played clutch in the closing stretch of the second set, hitting a kill that put the Lady Spikers at set point, 24-23. After the Golden Tigresses forced a deuce, Canino again gave DLSU the set point advantage at 25-24.

The Golden Tigresses tied it again at 25-all but Canino smashed a backrow hit to tie the match for the Lady Spikers. From there, DLSU turned the tables around as they walloped UST in the next two sets.

“She’s very consistent. What she does in practice she’s showing it in the game,” said La Salle coach Noel Orcullo, who took over the coaching chores from Ramil de Jesus in the tournament.

Regina Jurado led the way with 12 points while Xyza Gula finished with 11 markers as the Golden Tigresses suffered their first defeat in the tournament after winning four straight matches.

Meanwhile, Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles also continued their perfect run in the tournament after a 25-21, 26-24, 26-24 sweep of University of Perpetual Help Lady Altas.
