MANILA – De La Salle University Lady Spikers halted a two-game slide in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-18 sweep of the University of the East Lady Warriors yesterday at the San Juan Arena.
Rookie Jolina dela Cruz led the way with 14 points on nine attacks, three service aces and two blocks.
The defending champions Lady Spikers got back on the winning track to improve to 4-2 win-loss slate.
Ernestine Tiamzon chipped in 10 points as a fill-in starter for injured Desiree Cheng while Marionne Alba tallied 12 excellent digs and Michelle Cobb contributed 16 excellent sets.
The Lady Spikers were on a mission. Early in the first set it cruised to a 13-8 advantage.
The Lady Warriors rallied to within 15-17 but the Lady Spikers countered with an 8-3 run, capped by back-to-back UE errors, to close the set.
The Lady Warriors started strong in the second frame with a 12-6 lead but the Lady Spikers leaned on Tiamzon and Lourdes Clemente to force a deadlock at 18-all. DLSU continued its rally before clinching the set with a Dela Cruz ace.
The Lady Spikers trailed early in the third set before taking a 15-12 lead.
The Lady Warriors kept the match close at 17-18 but DLSU went for the finishing run behind Tiamzon and Dela Cruz to close the match.
Judith Abil and Mary Ann Mendrez finished with eight points apiece, while Kathleen Arado had double-double 21 excellent digs and 10 excellent receptions for the Lady Warriors (1-5)./PN
