DLSU torches UST in UAAP basketball

MANILA – The De La Salle University Green Archers leaned on a massive third quarter assault to defeat the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, 83-63, in the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball last night at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.

Deschon Winston led the way with 19 points, while fellow Filipino-American reinforcement Michael Phillips added double-double 11 points and 14 rebounds. With the victory, the Green Archers improved to 1-1.

Cyrus Austria tallied career-high 13 points, while rookie Kevin Quiambao bounced back from a subpar debut to end up with 11 points, three rebounds and three assists.

The Green Archers went to work early with conversions from Winston and Phillips for a double-digit lead. The Tigers rallied to take a 33-32 edge but DLSU answered back with connections from Winston for a 47-40 halftime lead.

DLSU turned things around in the third quarter with inside connections from Phillips and three-pointers from Negrense Mark Nonoy and Winston as the lead reached its largest at 24 points.

Miguel Pangilinan top-scored with 11 points to go with nine rebounds, while Nicael Cabañero, Adama Faye and Paul Manalang had 10 markers each as the Growling Tigers dropped to 1-1.

Meanwhile, defending champions University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons erased a double-digit deficit to score an 87-78 overtime win against Adamson University Falcons.

Down by as much as 16 points, the Fighting Maroons battled back in the fourth quarter to take a 74-71 lead but three free throws by the Falcons send the match into overtime.

In the extension period, the Fighting Maroons jumped to an early 8-0 scoring blast for a quick 82-74 advantage and never looked back to move to a 2-0 start this season.

Zavier Lucero top-scored for the Fighting Maroons with 15 points, Maodo Malick Diouf had double-double 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Terrence Fortea and Carl Tamayo chipped in 12 and 11. 

In the first game, University of the East Red Warriors snapped a 15-game losing skid with a 76-66 stunner over Far Eastern University Tamaraws. Kyle Paranada led UE with 25 points.
