THE Department of Energy (DOE) has called on Filipinos to switch off non-essential lights and electrical appliances, a symbolic gesture to raise awareness of climate change and environmental issues, on Earth Hour 2025 on Saturday.

The DOE enjoined Filipinos to conserve water, as energy and water are interdependent. With the theme “Switch Off and Secure Water for All”, Earth Hour 2025 will be from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

DOE Secretary Raphael Lotilla said that every kilowatt-hour of electricity consumed requires water-cooling processes in thermal power plants, hydropower systems, or the energy needed to pump, treat and distribute water.

“Using energy judiciously is not just about reducing consumption—it is about preserving life itself. Every watt saved is a drop of water protected, reinforcing the delicate balance of our environment,” Lotilla said in a statement Thursday.

“By embracing energy efficiency and conservation, we do more than cutting emissions, we secure the future of our most vital resources for generations to come,” he added.

The symbolic global event aims to cool down the planet by minimizing electricity usage through the simultaneous switching off of non-essential lights and appliances.

“Through small but consistent actions, individuals, businesses, and communities can make a lasting impact on energy and water conservation, strengthening climate resilience and promoting a more sustainable way of life,” the DOE chief said.

During last year’s Earth Hour, the country saved 132.11 megawatts of energy. (PNA)
